Stars Over Union Hill Quilt Pattern By Pam Buda of Heartspun Quilts

    Finished Size: 69 1/2"" x 81".

"Stars made their appearance on buildings in the 1700's. Iron stars were used to hold and stabilize the brick walls of buildings with heavy wire cables strung inside the building between the stars. Many of these iron building stars can still be seen on the outside of colonial era buildings.

On older American barns, particularly German farms, one could see a large decorations in the shape of a star mounted on the face of the barn. Often the "Barn Stars" were just aesthetic, but sometimes they represented the trademark of a particular builder. Although they go back to at least 1820 in Pennsylvania, they were most popular after the American Civil War. In modern times they have come to be known as a sign of good fortune and luck. They are a popular and welcomed addition to our homes today!" -Pam Buda
